On Saturday, November 9, 2024, Edna High School will proudly host its first annual Cowboy Debates. This exciting event, named the Cowboy Debates, was envisioned by two of our own educators, Mark Ruiz, Debate Coach and UIL Coordinator Sarah Bradley. This tournament will feature two competitive formats: Cross-Examination Debate and Lincoln-Douglas Debate, providing students with valuable practice as they prepare for the upcoming high school Academic UIL season.
In Cross-Examination Debate, teams of two students argue opposing sides of a policy question. The format emphasizes strategic questioning, allowing each team to examine the other’s arguments and seek clarity on weak points. Cross-examination helps students develop teamwork skills, quick thinking, and the ability to challenge ideas in real time.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate, on the other hand, is a one-on-one format focusing on values-based arguments. Students debate moral or ethical questions, advocating for principles and beliefs in a persuasive and analytical way. Named after the famous 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, this style requires students to build well-reasoned cases on both sides of complex issues.
The Cowboy Debates aim to inspire students to engage in critical thinking, build confidence, and practice public speaking skills. This inaugural meet is an excellent foundation for Edna High School's budding debate program, marking a significant step in preparing our students for a successful UIL season and beyond.
